Officers 2009-2010

President - Ester Ball

Ester was the 12th of 13 children born to green card carrying Mexican national migrant workers in North Dakota. She began her “waltz” with dentistry at 16 while working for a pediatric dentist as a junior in high school.  Her boss suggested that she apply to dental hygiene school.  She applied and got accepted at the University of Texas, School of Dental Hygiene, Houston, and graduated in 1968.  Ester became a licensed hygienist at age 20 and remembers that the Cavitron was something dragged out only for “hard” cases.  “Wow!  How things have changed.”

Ester has worked in general dentistry practices most of her 41 years, but also has enjoyed working for periodontists and prosthodontists.  In 1995 Ester earned her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene degree from Texas Woman’s University.  Now Ester has made the full circle and has what she feels is the most wonderful job in the world, working with special needs kids (and parents!) at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.

Ester has served her dental hygiene profession at all levels and hopes to continue to do so even after retirement, which she sees looming on the horizon.  She wants to become certified in administering local anesthesia so that she can volunteer with the Indian Health Service and work on the reservation near Flagstaff, AZ.

Ester loves dental hygiene, next only to her siblings and her Lord.

President Elect - Betty Haynes

Pic254 After graduating from Nederland High School in 1969, Betty enrolled in Career Academy Dental Assisting School in Houston, Texas.  Beginning her journey with dentistry back in her hometown of Nederland, Betty worked for a wonderful dentist and through his motivation, she decided to attend Lamar University Dental Hygiene School.  Graduating in 1973 from Lamar's first graduating class in 1973, Betty became involved with the Sabine District Dental Hygienist’ Society.  In September of 2001, Betty moved to Houston where she began working for a periodontist and immediately joined the Greater Houston Dental Hygienist’ Society.  In the past nine years she has served GHDHS in various positions such as Secretary, TDHA Delegate and President.   Serving on the TDHA Board (Secretary, Delegate, meeting site planning, 2nd Vice President and various committees) has given Betty the opportunity to meet other hygienists who give of their time to our profession and serve as your voice for TDHA.

During her 37 years as a Dental Hygienist, Betty has seen many changes from her experience in school.  From no mask, no gloves, no cavitron (need she say more) to full body guard and a wonderful cavitron! Being involved in national, state and component activities has always been important and she believes what you give to your chosen profession will be given back to you.  Dental Hygiene has given Betty the opportunity to meet wonderful friends and give back to the community through volunteering.

On a personal note, Betty has two sons, a wonderful daughter-in-law and two beautiful granddaughters who live in the Houston area and bring such joy to her life. The other side of her is trying to keep up with the Facebook crowd!  Betty rarely has any spare time and cherishes the time she does have with family and friends.

2nd Vice President – Olivia Schreiner

Olivia attended Dental Hygiene School at the University of Texas – Health Science Center of Houston, and graduated in the top ten percent of her class in 2003.  Active involvement with ADHA has been important to Olivia from the time she organized a dog biscuit baking party for the SADHA Annual Session Marketplace, to the current days of administrating the Facebook group page for her local component, Bay Area Dental Hygienists’ Society.  In past years, she has served BADHS in various positions such as newsletter editor, president, and trustee to TDHA.  Olivia served on the TDHA Board of Directors for three years as the trustee for BADHS before running for TDHA 2nd Vice-President.  She has immensely enjoyed fostering friendships with so many other wonderful colleagues and professionals, and hopes to continue doing so for years to come.

Olivia grew up in Deer Park, TX and currently lives in League City.  She practices 4 days a week in a general private practice in Dickinson.  Her wonderful husband of nearly 10 years, Will, is a very good babysitter for their 11-month-old daughter, Kate, when Mommy needs to get a work-out at the local YMCA.  On the weekends, the happy trio enjoys family time together, as well as church attendance and occasional social outings.

Treasurer - Sarah Roddy

Sarah was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley.  She used to visit San Antonio as a child and always said that when she grew up, she wanted to live in San Antonio.  Sarah has been living in San Antonio since 1997.  Sarah graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene and really enjoys being a dental hygienist.  She has been a member of ADHA since she graduated and was a member of the student organization when she was in school.  Sarah believes that it is important to support and be involved in the organization that supports us.  Sarah has been SADDHS treasurer since 2005 and enjoys doing her part to be involved with the organization.

Sarah and her husband, Shane have been married for 10 years and our “kids” are three miniature schnauzers, Skeet, Sadie and Chewie.  Sarah enjoys all types of crafts; this is how she keeps herself busy when she is not trying to balance a check book.  During the fall, she is busy attending Longhorn football games.   HOOK’EM HORNS!!

Immediate Past President - Nancy Cline

TDHA’s Immediate Past President, Nancy V. Cline, has spent most of her professional career in dental hygiene education.  After receiving a BS in Dental Hygiene and a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of California she moved with her husband, Barney, to the island of Puerto Rico.  Nancy taught dental hygiene and public health at the University of Puerto Rico School of Dentistry for six years before moving to New Orleans.  She spent sixteen years teaching at Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, and was director of the dental hygiene program at LSU for ten of those years.

Nancy has always been interested and involved in organized dental hygiene and tried to impress on her students the importance of belonging to their professional association.  Since moving to Texas she has been active in the Austin Component and served as President.  She has served TDHA as TEX HY-PAC Treasurer and Professional Education Council Co-Chair.

Nancy and Barney live on a small ranch outside Blanco, Texas, where they enjoy their four pet longhorns, three miniature donkeys, two dogs and a cat.  They have two grown children, a daughter-in-law and a beautiful 18 month old granddaughter.  Nancy volunteers one day a week at the Blanco Library, is on the Library Board of Trustees, and is helping raise funds for a new Library building.  Libraries and dental hygiene are dear to Nancy’s heart.
