Sealants Across Texas
In observance of October being national Dental Hygiene Month, the Texas Dental Hygienists' Association will conduct a community-based dental sealant project called "Sealants Across Texas." Throughout the state, various dental hygiene components will participate in providing dental sealants for children. "We are proud to be the licensed Oral Health Prevention Specialists of the dental team. Dental hygienists provide quality dental services to the public. We dedicate this upcoming project to increase everyone's awareness for the need for a healthy mouth. The mouth is the gateway to the entire body. Our oral health does affect our entire health.
Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to "seal" the pits and grooves on the teeth where tooth decay (cavities) occurs. Getting sealants placed on the chewing surfaces of the teeth is a simple and painless procedure. No injections (shot) or anesthesia is required. The cost of a sealant is usually about half the cost of a filling. Sealants can last as long as 5 to 10 years. The sealants should be checked regularly by your dentist or dental hygienist.
